LUNATO ,Orvieto D.O.C., Classico Superiore

Lunato is the expression of typical characteristics in the territory and in our local wine-making tradition in terms of its great depth and intensity. It comes from the oldest of our vineyards, where the single productions have naturally begun to get smaller. The grapes are picked with high concentration and structure, generally riper than the average.

Production zone: the heart of Orvieto classico production
Vineyard size: 7 hectares, at 280 – 330 metres above sea level
Soil: of volcanic origin, east, south and west facing
Age of the vineyards: 18 – 30 years with a density of 2,700 vines per hectare
Grape varieties: Trebbiano 40%, Verdello 20%, Malvasia 5%, Grechetto 30%, Drupeggio 5%
Production: grape production per hectare is roughly 7,000 kgs. This low yield is due to lack of fertiliser and irrigation, but mainly to the age of the vineyards.
The grapes are harvested normally in the first week of October. After a gentle pressing, the fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of roughly 19 degrees for roughly 12 days. After an approximately 6-month spell in the cellars and a 2-month refinement in bottles, the wine is put on the market at the end of April.
Organoleptic characteristics: a wine of elegant, robust character, Lunato has a strong straw colour with gold tints. It begins with a full, complex, intriguing aroma. Its contact with the taste buds is particularly soft and enveloping though it is still decidedly dry and with a long lasting aroma.
