BERGANORIO, Orvieto Classico Secco

Berganorio is witness to Le Velette’s history. We have always tried to link the value that is given to a wine by people’s ability to recognise its territory of origin with the value of research into new ways of expressing these features that make it typical.
The traditional grapes in the Orvieto Classico D.O.C. production area – Procanico, Grechetto, Verdello, Malvasia and Drupeggio – have been subject to careful experimentation over the years, thanks to which, since the 1980s we have redefined what was for us and our territory the optimum relation between the varieties used, bearing in mind also the new techniques of cultivation and wine production.

Production zone: the heart of Orvieto classico production
Vineyard size: 50 hectares, at 280 – 330 metres above sea level
Soil: of volcanic origin, east, south and west facing
Age of the vineyards: 4 – 30 years with a density of 3000 vines per hectare
Grape varieties: Trebbiano (Procanico) 45%, Grechetto 25%, Verdello, Malvasia, Drupeggio 30%
Production: grape production per hectare does not exceed 9,500 kgs., thanks to severe pruning, lack of fertiliser and irrigation. The wine yield per hectare does not exceed 60 hectilitres.
The grapes are harvested normally between 15th September and 10th October, scrupulously following the ripening times of the different grape varieties. The fermentation at a controlled temperature of roughly 17 degrees keeps the heritage of aroma intact. After a 5-month spell in the cellars, the wine is put on the market in the month of March.
Organoleptic characteristics: Berganorio is the expression of the freshness and harmony of a historic wine, whose territorial characteristics it proposes through its strong personality. A strong straw colour with greenish tints, it has a fruity, harmonious aroma, of good complexity. Its taste is full and pleasantly fresh and it has a slightly bitter after-taste.
