CALANCO, IGT Umbria, 2001
Sangiovese and cabernet, grown with particular attention to finding a strong concentration of extracts, in very small vineyards which have always been the best microclimates for red wines, south and south-west facing. Out of this programme Calanco was first produced in 1990 to show the versatility of the Orvieto wine area on fronts not previously explored.
This research is a continuous process giving increasingly convincing results, which we try to achieve through forms of growth, the preparation of the soil, pruning and thinning out of the bunches through which, at the beginning of October, the optimal ripening is reached expressing all the sun and intensity of he climate in which they have grown. The more one looks for high level results, the less definitive any goal will seem.
For this reason, we of Le Velette estate like Calanco because it is a demonstration of the great potential of our vineyards and because it is one of those wines which renders the work of preparation in the vineyards and cellars wonderful in that it is never-ending.
Production zone: the heart of Orvieto classico production
Soil: of volcanic origin
Age of the vineyards: 5 – 30 years
Grape varieties: Sangiovese 65%, Cabernet Sauvignon 35%
Organoleptic characteristics: intense ruby colour with purple tints, it has the aroma of ripe red berries and a slight whiff of vanilla. The taste is intense, typically recalling a Cabernet with a slight trace of paprika. Well-structured tannics and intense harmony of body. The period spent in barriques - wooden barrels? gives very delicate vanilla tones.
